FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Still have questions? Talk to a mediator or contact support.
- Is Common Ground a law firm?
- No. Common Ground is a mediation platform, not a law firm, and does not provide legal advice. We work alongside legal counsel and recommend independent review before any agreement is signed.
- How much does it cost?
- $49 to open a case. From there you choose the level of support: Basic (self-guided) or Guided ($299+, AI-assisted). No hourly billing.
- Who can use this?
- Two parties to a private dispute — most commonly family matters (parenting, separation), small-business partnership questions, neighbor or housing disputes, and small civil settlements.
- Is it confidential?
- Yes. Conversations, drafts, and case details stay between the parties, except as required by law or to enforce a signed agreement.
- When is mediation NOT appropriate?
- Mediation isn't appropriate where there is domestic violence, coercion, or a power imbalance that prevents free negotiation. If you feel unsafe, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
- Can I bring my own lawyer?
- Yes — at any point. Our agreements are written in plain language so your attorney can review them quickly.
- What if we can't reach an agreement?
- Either party can request a human mediator at any time. If mediation isn't working, nothing prevents you from pursuing other legal options.
- How long does it take?
- The average case reaches a written agreement in about 11 days. Some are faster, some slower — pacing is set by the parties.
