Frequently asked questions

Still have questions? Talk to a mediator or contact support.

Is Common Ground a law firm?
No. Common Ground is a mediation platform, not a law firm, and does not provide legal advice. We work alongside legal counsel and recommend independent review before any agreement is signed.
How much does it cost?
$49 to open a case. From there you choose the level of support: Basic (self-guided) or Guided ($299+, AI-assisted). No hourly billing.
Who can use this?
Two parties to a private dispute — most commonly family matters (parenting, separation), small-business partnership questions, neighbor or housing disputes, and small civil settlements.
Is it confidential?
Yes. Conversations, drafts, and case details stay between the parties, except as required by law or to enforce a signed agreement.
When is mediation NOT appropriate?
Mediation isn't appropriate where there is domestic violence, coercion, or a power imbalance that prevents free negotiation. If you feel unsafe, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
Can I bring my own lawyer?
Yes — at any point. Our agreements are written in plain language so your attorney can review them quickly.
What if we can't reach an agreement?
Either party can request a human mediator at any time. If mediation isn't working, nothing prevents you from pursuing other legal options.
How long does it take?
The average case reaches a written agreement in about 11 days. Some are faster, some slower — pacing is set by the parties.
